• Serial Number — a unique, randomised or sequential identifier per saleable unit, AI (21). This is what makes every single pack different from every other pack.
• Batch / Lot Number — AI (10), tying the unit back to its manufacturing record.
• Expiry Date — AI (17) in YYMMDD format.

For secondary and tertiary packaging, aggregation data (parent-child relationships between unit, bundle, case and pallet, typically using SSCC under AI (00)) must also be captured and reported to the Tatmeen platform via the EPCIS event interface. The label itself must be legible and durable for the product's full shelf life.

Why Outsourcing Pre-Printed Labels Is Failing

• Serials must be unique per unit. A pre-printed reel cannot carry one-million distinct serial numbers without becoming a variable-data print job in the first place. Service bureaus that try to fulfil this are quoting four to eight week lead times.
